Transitioning Wrestling Style

PART I – SIGNS, WHEN, WHERE

If you haven’t been able to tell, the Professional Wrestling Industry as a whole has been in a Transition period for quiet some time, perhaps this entire decade of 2010’s. A number of factors back this up.

Even WWE only fans have to see this, as the WWE itself is in a Transition Period, seemingly unable to keep talent happy, keep talent, or right their sinking ship. This isn’t a recent event either. The fact that guys like Neville and Austin Ares walked out and Dean Ambrose refused to resign, plus the tanking ratings, prove that.

It’s not just the WWE, as I stated above, it’s the entire industry that’s in a Transitioning Period. Just look at what is going on around the world of Pro Wrestling:

• Lucha Underground has stuck around for the last five years.
• New Japan has a presence on American TV on AXS TV (albeit not National or on all cable Providers).
• Dragon Gate did shows on American Soil for 6 years as Dragon Gate USA.
• Major League Wrestling is fast become a big time viable promotion.
• Many Small Promotion are going strong (United Wrestling Network, Future Stars of Wrestling, Evolve).
• NXT Exist and the WWE has working deals with Indie Promotions in the US and UK – which includes Evolve.
• The WWE Saudi shows.
• AJ Styles as WWE Champion???
• AJ Styles and Samoa Joe feuding in WWE?
• The Return to Prominence of the NWA?
• All-In
• FITE TV
• The Rise of AEW

Ask yourself these two questions:

Was any of this possible around 10 years ago?

Would any of this had been possible if WCW was still around?

Answer to both: NO.

Also, notice two big things missing from my list above: Ring of Honor and IMPACT Wrestling (TNA).

The reasons for their exclusion are simple. I do not believe this current transition period had any bearing on the formation or creation of either Ring of Honor or IMPACT. Furthermore IMPACT seems incapable of doing anything right or growing their audience even under new management and with great talent like Brian Cage. IMPACT was once a distant #2 to the WWE, and was at a time on the verge of rising up – but since that moment has only dwindled.

Ring of Honor on the other hand seems unwilling to try and spread its wings even after a successful MSG Event and being involved in All-In.

No, everything I listed above is a direct result of the Transition Period.

So, when did this current Transition Period start? Was it the end of the Monday Night Wars?

Nope. That was a Transition Period, but only a brief one. The WWE came out strong and burst out of the gate the winner. The wrestling world lost for a while, but righted itself thanks to a strong indie scene and the rise of the internet (YouTube, Internet PPV). And, yes, the formation of TNA and Ring of Honor.

This period is a little more recent then 2001, and has the opportunity to be a true Game Changer if handled right.

There are really three questions that come with this Transition Period, none of which have any definitive answer:

1) When did this period start?

2) Did it begin with the WWE, or is it affecting the WWE?

3) Will it be a boon, a bust, or end with the Status Quo intact?


1) It is hard to pinpoint when this transition period started. But I believe a possible point could be the original version of NXT. Remember that? The version that took over the WWE Version of ECW’s timeslot on Syfy? Best Forgotten, right?

I don’t disagree with that, but hear me out. This is the show were they had Pros (like the MIz) mentoring Rookies (Like Daniel Bryan). This show lead to the prominence of The Nexus – a faction made up of Indie Wrestlers.

It also lead to the Rise of DANIEL BRYAN. As The American Dragon Bryan Danielson, he was already a World-Wide (Indie) Super Star.

The reason I cite this as a possible point is that it was the first time in a long time – perhaps since their working deals with USWA and ECW – that the WWE directly acknowledge that Indie Wrestling Existed.

Consider this: How many TNA and ROH guys are in the WWE (NXT and Main).

One could consider OVW or FCW as possible causes when they were part of WWE Developmental, but I don’t simple because they didn’t have a direct impact on the WWE like NXT did. Most people didn’t know at the time that WWE had a development system.

Another possible point is a little hard to pin down, but still could be a launching pad for this Transition Period – even if many fans don’t consider this thing.

It’s this: The fact that many wrestlers can make a living doing this without the WWE even to the point of walking away.

Chris Jericho is a perfect example of this – though his name was sky rocketed by WCW and the WWE. But what about Austin Ares – a good damn MEGA-STAR who doesn’t need the WWE and left because he didn’t like how he was being used.

Neville?

Jon Moxley anyone?

Or how about the perfect example: Kenny Omega.

It’s also possible the damn PG Era and bad WWE Booking and shows caused all this.

Of course I have to mention the WWE Network and the minor success it has been, but has it backfired? Is showcasing WCW, ECW, WCCW, AWA, WWF and other promotions no matter how old caused many younger fans to seek out something similar. With the WWE product what it is right now, has this caused fans to turn to the Indies?

Either way this leads directly into . . .

2) Did it begin with the WWE, or is it affecting the WWE?

Following on many of the things I wrote above there is an argument to be made that it started with the WWE, and if it did than of course it is affecting the WWE.

Even if it didn’t it is obviously affecting the WWE.

Just look at where the WWE is: Bad Creative, Talent publically wanting out (ones that aren’t a work); Talent leaving; The WWE Network’s lack of grow and the tanking ratings hitting all time low points. Even if the Industry wasn’t in a Transition Period, the WWE itself damn-well-is.

And it seems to have no idea what to do, or even that they need to do something.

For the WWE the Transition Period is only going to extend – good or bad – once SD Live jumps to FOX.

But where it started, how it started – The WWE or not – is really a moot point. It’s across the whole industry. For here what really matters is what happens and where we go . . .

When I originally announced this current Blog Hiatus, I said ALL my Blogs would return starting July 1st with WrestleMentary. Then, a few weeks later I mentioned pushing that return back to my Birthday, July 27th. Well, I’m changing that again and going back to the original plan: July 1st

As of Monday, July 1st the Blogs will return from Hiatus starting with Wrestlementary.

From there all the Blogs (except Wrestlementary) will return on the originally planned 2019 Monthly Schedule.

The State of the Blogs May 2019

Okay, this State Of is going out across all my Blogs. It’s a companion piece to my State of the Master.

I am far behind on all my Blogs because of my shoulder, and at times – I must admit – myself allowing my shoulder issues to stop me.

I started this year with great plans, but didn’t . . .

As I wrote in my State of the Master Blog, effective immediately I’m in going into Focus Mode and Catch Up Mode. I have to do this.

Originally, the plan was to officially suspend until July 1st. But that has changed due to an emergency.
My dog, Zoie, had to undergo emergency surgery to be spade (which was never done) and remove a breast growth. She is recovering now, and we have found out the tumor was a low-grade cancer, but it has all been removed.

This was very stressful on her, me and Mom. So I put everything to the side to take care of the little girl. She is doing fine right now and gets her cone and stitches removed Monday, May 13th. I could do no less for Zoie as she is the one who got my mom the day I collapse in the back yard from the Aneurysm, if not for her I may have died. 

That said, I am now suspending the Blogs until their return on my Birthday: Sunday, July 27th. The day the Blogs will return with RAW FLESH . . . and move forward from there.

As originally stated I will try and post on the original 2019 schedule from that point on AND post on a Catch Up Schedule, posting all the stuff from this year that hasn’t been posted.

Yes, I will be writing, editing and prepping all the Blog Posts I have missed up to that point.

I’ll also be getting caught up on projects this year that I have gotten behind on.

This is the LAST Time I will be doing this and suspending the Blogs. It’s something I have to do, for myself and to move forward.

WrestleMania 35 Predictions

My Predictions

Well, all my plans got changes because of my work schedule and shoulder issues. I didn’t finished writing my Road to WrestleMania pieces and decided to let that go and just do my Prediction for the show.

To be honest I am not overly thrilled with this show and don’t expect much. I hope it may be on par with last year’s show, which is really asking all that much. I don’t seeing it being as good as Wrestlemania 33 (one of the best in years).

It feels put together on the fly, with no real idea of what to do going into the show, so we have to weight on sell.

With 16 matches on the card (Kick Off and Main Card combined), it already feels like overkill and dragged like, like last year’s card. Factor in rumors of a Rock appearance and a ‘surprise’ John Cena appearance and match, and it will drag on even more.

It’ like they are trying to put two show into one.

The matches I am looking forward to our: Orton v Styles, Batista V Triple H, Bryan v Kofi. The rest is iffy at best.

The raw and SMACKDOWN LIVE Paths to the Grand Stage.

Oh what a Rocky road it has been. I mean seriously, they were still announcing matches as of this past Smackdown Live? Sounds like they never had a plan in place, as this is way too late in the game.

Anyway, as I mentioned in my Wrestlementary Note (2nd Version), here starts my thoughts on the Road to WRESTLEMANIA! This was original post Monday on Facebook, it had been modified a little, with thoughts add on the Go-Home Suck

MONDAY NIGHT raw

The Path to WRESTLEMANIA

Thoughts and Comments on WWE’s Flagship show through the first quarter of 2019 and the Road to WRESTLEMANIA.

No, I have not misspelled raw above. When it deserved to be called RAW again, I will write it as RAW, but until then it is be known as raw here at Wrestlementary.

I am not going to bury the lead here, and I am going to get right down to it. Leading into the Royal Rumble I told friends, and posted online that I thought raw had turned the corner and was good. I thought it was finally out of its rut and back on track.

Then the Rumble hit, then came the crash. Usually this time of the year (WRESTLEMANIA Season), is when the WWE steps up its game and puts forth all the good stuff – an entire year’s worth of good stuff.

Someone seems to have forgotten to tell Vince and crew that WRESTLEMANIA is only days away, which was very evident with the Go Home raw.

Really Average Wrestling might be a step up at this point.

I mean, let’s get serious. Each week for months now we have been getting the some old routines, and they’ve even brought in older routines.

In writing formula and structure are king – but the WWE has forgone trying to structure RAW and has kept slogging forward with the same tired formula.

The proof is there for everyone to see. Attendance is down, that is plain to see. Just look at the empty seats on raw and SD LIVE on TV, or pay close attention to what camera angles they DON’T show. Then there are the ratings – soon to be so low they’ll bust through the bottom of the tank.

How many times can they keep screwing with the Revival and making them look like a joke?

How many times can we do the same segment with Elias?! Let him get in a performance, then maybe we can get him gone.

Why is Baron Corbin still dressing, acting and talking like he’s in Charge?

Angle?

Brock Lesnar being a No Show Champ and Heyman cutting the same damn promo every time desperately trying to keep Brock relevant?

In the middle of the so-called Women’s Evolution, why are we still getting meaningless matches? We had better, bigger and more impactful matches BEFORE the Evolution PPV then we have had since. Yes we have the Tag Titles, but what is really being done with them.

The same feud that was going on before the titles came to life at the Elimination Chamber is the same feud still happening now.

I now I am spewing a lot of Heel talk here, but it is all true. Think about it . . .

Think about the reactions Rhonda Rousey is getting. Not her reactions, the crowd’s reactions to her. Their Booing. In her own home town none-the-less. It’s obvious that the WWE Universe doesn’t want her there, and more obvious she’s partly being pushed because of that.

Batista. Batista is back, doing a piss poor segment where he supposedly beat up Flair and calls out Hunter. Since then simply demanding “Gimmie what I want!”

Hunter and Batista at WRESTLEMANIA? I like the match, not the build, but we should have something fresh for WRESTLEMANIA.

See older routine.

Let’s not forget the debacle of Becky Lynch versus Rhonda Rousey at WRESTLEMANIA . . . I mean Charlotte Flair versus Rhonda Rousey . . . or is it Flair Versus Lynch . . . or Lynch versus Flair versus Rousey . . . has Rousey won yet? Isn’t Lynch suspended? Or is it injured?

I forget, correct me if I am wrong . . . didn’t Lynch win the Rumble?

Over booked, overdone, badly written and buried into the ground. If not for Lynch, would anyone care? Do they now?

The McMahon promise. Wasn’t there a promise that things were going to change? Didn’t they scrap the General Manager idea for something better? (Them in control) Didn’t they promise new talent?

Has any of that happened? Isn’t the change just the McMahon’s back to pushing their weight around blatantly, rather than through a lackey? Isn’t what we have now, the same thing we’ve always had?

As for new talents: I like the idea of calling up talent from NXT – but let’s face it NXT is the WWE. How about some actual new talent: HAMMERSTONE anyone? Chris Evans? Funnybone? Tyler Bateman?

Except for Ricochet and Allister Black, why would anyone want to come up? Sanity anyone?

If it’s not bad enough that creative and booking has failed, so have talent. Match quality has been failing, and I don’t mean short TV Time matches. I mean a lot of matches have not been good. Some have looked very amateurish, like talent just going through the motions.

In some cases they come off like poorly done, bush league indie never-been-trained put on by friends for laughs, type bad.

I went there. I mean it. Move on.

Okay, so now it’s Face time.

Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins is generally the good part of Monday Night, on the mic and in matches. He’s the one consistent there is right now, and rightfully so who raw should be built around.

Finn Balor is also part of the ‘pinch of good’ WWE has, but how he is used is terrible. Talent, mic skills, looks, popularity and merchandize sales are all there. The question I have is this: is his height really what is keeping him back?

Probably, which sucks. Height is one thing no one can do anything about, it also has no bearing on how good, tough, strong or athletic an athlete is. Look no further than Gymnasts, or featherweight boxes or MMF Fighters for proof of that.

Ok, let’s go straight into the NXT Call ups of Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, Ricochet and Allister Black! Whether they are ‘New’ faces or not, they are a much needed positive injection into Monday Night raw.

Unfortunately, raw has stopped using Gargano since Ciampa is injured, which I don’t understand. Are you going to actually tell me that raw couldn’t benefit by Johnny Wrestling’s presence?

How odd is it that Allister Black is one of the shinning lights on raw? He and Ricochet have set raw and Smackdown Live on fire. Who would have thought that these two would become the Tag Team of the Hour? They are dynamic and have a chemistry rarely seen.

Jeff Jarrett, with Road Dog, has been the Highlight of raw so far this year. YES, this may come under the ‘Older Routine,’ but it was done right, keep short and didn’t really take up to much time or anyone’s spot. In fact it was used to help build up Elias and ‘pass-the-torch.’

BETH PHOENIX!

Does anything else in the Women’s Division matter? The Glamazon is back! Even if it is just one WRESTLEMANIA match, the Glamazon is back!

Older routine? Yeah. Am I being a hypocrite? Does it matter? BETH PHOENIX!!

GO HOME raw

Terrible show for a Go Home PPV. For any PPV. It should have lead straight into WRESTLEMANIA, but it really didn’t, it just slugged along like normal. I barely remember what the Main Event was. Corbin versus Mysterio I think? How does Mysterio’s involvement help build to the Angle/Corbin match? Shouldn’t the use Mysterio to build to HIS match at WRESTLEMANIA?

Can anything help build the Angle/Corbin match?

There were really only three good things on raw that lead into WRESTLEMANIA.

1. The Opening Segment with Heyman, Brock and Seth, which saw Seth finally get the upper hand – and probably foreshadows his loss at WRESTLEMANIA. Hopefully it won’t be typical WWE booking.

2. Batista’s Promo. BEST. BATISTA. PROMO. EVER. “Kiss my ass, Hunter.”

3. Flair, Lynch, Rousey brawl, cops hits, everyone cuffed and hailed off to Jail. YES, they finally did something interesting other than a screw job swerve.

Oh, and we also learned that the Revival is the greatest tag team in the world who can’t win a match.

Sad.

For the quarter:
Male Wrestler of the Quarter: Far and Away Seth Rollins.
Runner Up: Finn Balor

Female Wrestler of the Quarter: I almost want to say there isn’t one. No one has really stepped up in ring on raw. Becky and Charlotte haven’t wrestled enough on raw to really be considered. Just by default I have to go Rhonda Rousey, and not because she is (which she could be), but because the WWE is pushing her as that.

Match of the Quarter: Finn Balor’s Gauntlet run to win his Universal Title shot at the Royal Rumble.

Highlight of the Quarter: Jeff Jarrett.
Runner Up: Beth Phoenix’s return.

Final thoughts: We know the WWE can do better, and it has.

I could go on, and on, and on, but I am not going to. As I wrote in my Note, this is not an attempt to get caught up, but is a general overview of what we have been presented this year.

There is far more – good and bad – then I want to touch on here, and I’m sure most of it would be repetitive. The sad fact is, none of this is hate. I love pro-wrestling. I love the WWE. I want it to be better and good. I want REAL AWESOME WRESTLING . . . But . . . this is all true.

THE SMACKDOWN LIVE

PATH TO WRESTLEMANIA

Unlike raw, SMACKDOWN LIVE still gets to be called SMACKDOWN LIVE.

It is still the better show, the A show, raw’s the C at best show.

As it has been for the last five years or so, SMACKDOWN LIVE is still the better show of the two, even if some of the criticism toward raw can be leveled at SD Live as well.

SD Live is the better show because it has a:

World Champion in Daniel Bryan that actually shows up and does his job, even if he does it in the most annoying way possible.

It has a far superior Tag Team Division. (Seriously, why does RAW have Tag Team Champions?)

I would give the Smackdown Woman’s Division the edge, because it is arguably better utilized.

I think SD male roster may be deeper and better utilized, look no further than the Elimination Chamber match for that. Notice there was no raw Chamber match. And when Ali unfortunately went down, Kofi was slid it with any loss of talent or ability.

Can raw do that so seamlessly?

Maybe, but not likely.

On SD Live, creative has been better, the angles have been better, and talent has been booked and used better. Well, for the most part – unless you’re Sanity, or The Good Brothers . . . or Primo . . . maybe Shelton . . .

Smackdown is often the mirror image of raw, where raw is structure-less, with a failed formula, Smackdown Live is vibrant with good structure and a solid formula. It seem like on Smackdown they know what they are doing.

Here’s a point that I believe backs me up: Vince is on Smackdown heading into WRESTLEMANIA, not raw.

The best thing about Smackdown though is: The Matches. Far and away better – usually.

However, it’s not all bright and cherry, Smackdown is failing on some front as well.

The Bar Anyone? How do these guys go from Champions to Jobbers? Oh, wait, Nicholas and Shane McMahon. Right. These guys are better than this, and now that can’t beat anyone.

The Good Brothers, Sanity, Primo and other top great talent are never used. Ever. Gallows and Anderson are awesome and have never been used right. Eric Young is to notch and should go on a heel rampage. His title run in TNA/Impact was the best in years – reproduce that on Smackdown Live and you’ll have a winner.

But no, what do we get? Shane McMahon teaming with the Miz. I love the Miz, but I hate this. I truly hate this. Shane has no business in the ring, yet we have Sheamus and Caesaro jobbing to him. And he’s performing at WRESTLEMANIA again! Wasn’t he the one who was all about opportunity, new talent and new matches?

Is this any of that? No.

Is it good for the Miz? No. Terrible. Yes, he’s on WRESTLEMANIA when others aren’t, but he shouldn’t be doing something more meaningful, like going for a title.

And let’s not forget the bull crap of throwing Asuka under the bus to push the Lynch, Charlotte, Rousey main event. Way to take Asuka down, again.

GO HOME SHOW

Once again, SD Live shines where raw – you suck, you suck. The show mostly revolved around setting up WRESTLEMANIA.

Shane/Miz, Orton/Styles, Kofi/Bryan were all set up with segments, while we saw a very weird 18 person intergender match that was a preview of both Battle Royals. There was even a new match announced: Usos defending the Tag Titles in a fatal four-way.

Hey, raw, this is how you do a Go Home Show.

Overall, Smackdown Live is still the stronger show, but it has dropped as well, and ratings are showing that.

For the quarter:
Male Wrestler of the Quarter: TIE – Mustafa Ali and Kofi Kingston

Female Wrestler of the Quarter: As with raw, I have to by default say Asuka – even if they jobbed her out to Charlotte, again.

Match of the Quarter: The Pre-Elimination Chamber Match gauntlet match.

Highlight of the Quarter: The rise of Kofi.

Final thoughts: My final thoughts on raw, I wrote they can do better. Here is where they do better, but they can still step it up.

Wrestlementary Note

Well, my plans for Wrestlementary (and other blogs/projects) have been derailed again this year. I won’t detail why here, that will be in another upcoming post.

Also, this Note was meant to go up this past Sunday, but once again my plans were derailed. Why? Because I was locked of my blog account! I only regained access early Thursday morning. I don’t believe it was hacked, I just couldn’t get it.

Because of that, the original version of this Note and of my RAW 1st Quarter Thoughts were posted on Facebook Sunday and Monday. My original plan was to post something every day this week, with my Preview of Mania Predictions this Saturday. 

Obviously that has changed. 

With WrestleMania 35 looming over the horizon (just over three short days), I am going to write about the road to WrestleMania and get what I can up. If possible, I would have my RAW and Smackdown thoughts up tonight (Thursday), Royal Rumble, the Elimination Chamber and Fastlane thoughts up Friday and Mania thoughts up Saturday. If not, I will get what time allows. 😋

This is not an attempt to get caught up, but will be my comments, thoughts and general overview of what we have been presented this year – bad and bad, with a pinch of good.

I am going to leave this piece with this thought: I skipped watching three weeks of RAW and Smackdown after the Rumble (for a number of reasons). I am only caught up as of this past Friday (March 29).

I found that life went on, and I didn’t miss it.

Royal Rumble 2019 Preview and and Predictions

Preview and and Predictions

As I posted on Twitter and Facebook yesterday, there is no monthly recap this week as planned because of time restraints on me this week.

But, HERE are my Previews and Predictions for the Royal Rumble, right here in my home town. The whole Wrestlementary Crew will be in attendance, and I will be doing a write up from first hand experience during this week.


















So, here we go:

THE CARD

KICK OFF SHOW

Cruiserweight Championship Fatal 4-Way Match: Buddy Murphy (c) versus Akira Tozawa versus Kalisto versus Hideo Itami

I am behind on 205 Live, so I am not sure of any current storylines or feuds, but I know these four men very well. My favorite performer of these four is Akira Tozawa, with my least being Kalisto. Buddy Murphy has really step it up and proved he is the real deal since last summer. Hideo, he doesn’t seem to be able to get anything really going.

All four guys are high athletic and very good, so I am expecting an exciting, fast paced match. Buddy Murphy’s penchant for power moves adds a different dynamic here, it gives him a slight edge in the match.

• Who Should Win: Hideo Itami – He needs the win NOW, otherwise his WWE career is a total loss.

• Who Will Win: Buddy Murphy – I think he’s put the work in, is in even better shape than he was and has stepped up on all fronts. I think the WWE will move forward with him.

United States Championship Match: Rusev (c) versus Shinsuke Nakamura

I am very interested in this match because of the Lana angle. Nakamura didn’t do anything on purpose to hurt Lana. We know that. Neither did Rusev. We know that. It was an accident. Though both blame each other.

I expect a great match that could steal the show (for Non-Rumble Matches). In the past on Smackdown they have had great matches.

I want Rusev Day, but I think Lana will be the tipping point, will she stay with her Husband, or will she turn?

• Who Should Win: Rusev Day should continue to light the way.

• Who Will Win: Rusev.

MAIN CARD

Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: The Bar (c) versus The Miz and Shane McMahon

NO. NO. NO! This match should not be happening! Smackdown Live has spent too much time building to this match. It’s embarrassing for the Miz, and Shane shouldn’t be in the ring. Period.

I’m scared the WWE might pull the trigger and put the titles on Miz and Shane – going against the whole ‘New McMahon Era’ promise. Remember WrestleMania last year? Strowman and Nicklaus.

• Who Should Win: The BAR – No Explanation Needed

• Who Will Win: The BAR (PLEASE!)

Smackdown Women’s Championship Match: Asuka (c) versus Becky Lynch

Becky! Becky! Becky!

SD Live has spent great expense and the proper time building this match. This is the MUST SEEE match from the Blue Brand. Hell, they kicked off SD LIVE two weeks in a row and started it off on Fire.

I don’t think Asuka would be champion if Becky hadn’t been injured. And she didn’t beat Becky one-on-one. In fact, I don’t think they have ever had a match (?). Both ladies are super talented, both sport dangerous finishers and both can have great matches.

I am expecting one here.

Asuka is the better striker, and perhaps has a deeper arsenal. Becky is better on the mat and has added more MMA to her move set. Becky’s advantage may be that she is the better brawler and can flip the switch to violence a little easier.

• Who Should Win: Becky Lynch

• Who Will Win: Becky Lynch – She’s too on Fire to Deny.

Raw Women’s Championship Match: Ronda Rusey (c) versus Sasha Banks

So far, A Moment Of Bliss have delivered on the scandal and controversy and as a stage for setting up feuds and matches. Nowhere is this more evident than Ronda calling out Banks on the first BLISS.

I know this is a match a lot of fans want to see and am expecting a great match. Me not so much, I like Ronda and as a Pro Wrestler she is so much better than she was last year – which is no surprise. Sasha, I personally think Sasha is average at best, who can have good matches with talent of equal or better skills. She is a damn good personality and good on the mic though.

I can see the WWE putting Sasha over Ronda for her first loss, I’m just not sure if Sasha is the right person. If it goes that way, I believe a Sasha pin fall victory would be better than Tap Out.

• Who Should Win: Ronda Rousey

• Who Will Win: Ronda Rousey

WWE Championship Match: Daniel Bryan (c) versus AJ Styles

Oh Man – Here it is for the fourth time The Indie Dream Match for the WWE Championship.

The first match was won by AJ Styles during the Crown Jewel controversy.

The second started The NEW Daniel Bryan movement and his hot run. But will the real AJ Styles step up?

This might be the most even match up on the card – and just like the Brock/Balor title match, Vince himself is smack dab in the middle, given the match an extra feel to it.

Daniel Bryan has truly gone total heel as he champ. AJ is showing his passion again chasing for the title. Who will win? But does it matter? Both guys have shown they can carry SD LIVE and do what needs to be done.

• Who Should Win: Daniel Bryan – to continue a hot heel run.
• AJ Styles – perhaps to keep him in the WWE?

• Who Will Win: AJ Styles.

Universal Championship Match: Brock Lesnar (c) versus Finn Balor

What an upgrade here. Finn Balor against Brock Lesnar is more compelling and has more avenues to what can be done with it, than Braun versus Brock, again. Brock’s brawn versus Finn’s speed. Brock’s skill versus Finn’s finesses. The Beast versus All Heart.

If they are allowed to go, then this could be an epic contest – which Finn is used to putting on and Brock badly needs.

The WWE and RAW need a change of guard badly – will this be it?

• Who Should Win: Finn Balor – Balor is the best chance, best choice and best hope for the WWE moving forward. He will bring in more ratings and give them more versatility in the ring and better creative concepts.
• Most importantly, he WILL BE THERE.

• Who Will Win: Finn Balor

I pose this question, after being laid out to start RAW, will Brock Lesnar be facing Finn Balor or The Demon King . . . Or, if WWE truly wants to make a massive statement and prove they are going to adapt and change: PRINCE DEVITT.


Woman’s Royal Rumble Match

I am not going to list all the competitors in this match. I don’t think the participants are fully rounded out and there are always replacements and surprises.

I do wish the WWE had built this match up better. Shockingly I think RAW has done a better job of building the Women’s Rumble then Smackdown has. Smackdown has seemed more content to build Asuka/Becky and just showcase Charlotte as the Defacto winner of the Royal Rumble.

That’s the one problem with this match, this year: It feels like it is set in stone that Charlotte is going to win. I don’t think anyone else has even been built up as a potential winner. Of course, Asuka or Beck and Sasha or Ronda could show up in the Rumble depending on the outcome of their matches and position on the card.

The most compelling in-ring confrontation for the Rumble coming out of RAW is still Natty and the Riot Squad. For SD LIVE is it Naomi and Mandy Rose. This storyline is the only reason I have Mandy as a possible pick.

• Who Should Win: Bailey – Bailey is floundering, she would benefit the most from winning. There are also greater creative possibilities with her. Is Sasha wins, would Bailey choose to face her Best Friend at Mania, or go the Smackdown Route?
• Or, imagine this: Bailey versus Ronda at Mania? The Hugger versus the Baddest Bitch On The Planet. Could Ronda bring out the edge in Bailey? Maybe a heel turn.

• Who Will Win: Charlotte Flair – We are talking WrestleMania here. I don’t think the WWE is going to pull the trigger and go with a shocker here. I think Flair versus Ronda is still the Mania.

Men’s Royal Rumble Match

As I wrote for the Women’s match, I am not going to list the participants.

Unlike the Women’s Rumble, I think the WWE has done a good job building this match – even if SD LIVE has lacked a little.

You can build up the Royal Rumble by having people announce that are in the Rumble, dueling back in forth on the mic claiming they will win the Rumble, and – best of all – tease confrontations in the Rumble itself.

So far, at least half a dozen guys have announced they will WIN the Rumble.

As for confrontations, the WWE has built up the possibility of many: there could be a moment where Rollins and Ambrose are in the ring alone. We could see the AOP dominate then face off against Heavy Machinery.

Of course there are storylines that seem to have no implications for the Rumble that could pay off. Think of this: After the RAW Go Home Show Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins could team up in the Rumble to make an impact and move on forward reteamed and gunning for the Revival.

That is how you build the Rumble.

Of course, RAW seems to be building the Rumble around the possibility of Drew McIntyre humiliating everyone.

How Awesome would it be if Apollo Crews won? But again, I don’t think they’ll pull that trigger.

Samoa Joe, Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre are the best picks – but I’m not sure how the WWE views Joe since he has lost all his title matches.

• Who Should Win: Samoa Joe – Have Joe win, go on a tear to prove himself, and take the title from Lesnar at Mania (if he still has it).
• Seth Rollins – He’s too hot not to give it to him, and he’s turned it up. Imagine if Finn wins, we could get Rollins/Finn at Mania.
• Drew McIntyre – It’s time for the Chosen One to not be the Future, but become the Present.

• Who Will Win: Drew McIntyre

FINAL COMMENTS:

Across the board this is a stacked card and any of these matches could steal the show. It would be nice if for once in the last few years of the ENITRE PPV stole the show.

Expect to see my commentary on the Rumble (and perhaps the month of January) by next weekend.

NXT TAKE OVER - PHOENIX

NXT Takeover – Phoenix

When: Saturday, January 26, 2019

Where: Phoenix, Arizona

Venue: Talking Stick Resort Arena

This is NXT Takeover, right here in Phoenix and I (along with Wrestlementary Crew Member Dave Parrish) will be in attendance.




Honestly, I cannot give a full breakdown or Preview of TakeOver because I am so far behind on NXT and only watched the last two Episodes to gear up for being at the show – which will be the fourth NXT show held in Phoenix, and the fourth I have attended.

I can, however, list the card and give my predictions.

THE CARD

As of January 24, 2019

Matt Riddle versus Kassius Ohno
Chris Hero has always been good. Kassius Ohno seems stuck in a rut and never able to break out.

Matt Riddle is legit, nuff’ said.

• Who should Win: Matt Riddle – At this point he is the better bet, with the brighter future.
• Who Will WIN: Matt Riddle.

NXT North American Championship Match: Ricochet (c) versus Johnny Gargano
At one point Ricochet was considered the best in the world not signed to the WWE. And since signing, he has stepped it up even more.

Gargano has found his grove in NXT – becoming better than he ever was before.

This match should be the Highlight of the night.

• Who Should Win: Either Guy.
• Who Will Win: Ricochet

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: The Undisputed Ear (c) versus The War Raiders
Wow, the Ring of Honor lineage is thick in this match. Who would have ever thought we’d see this in WWE and NOT in ROH.

• Who Should Win: The Undisputed Era – it may be too soon for War Raiders.
• Who Will Win: To the winners goes the spoils of war – The War Raiders.

NXT Women’s Championship Match: Shayna Baszler (c) versus Bianca Belair
I am not sure about this, she’s good, but is Belair ready for Baszler?

• Who Should Win: Shayna Baszler
• Who Will Win: Shayna Baszler

NXT Championship Match: Tommaso Ciampa (c) versus Aleister Black
I just recently watched their first match, and I am stoked for this. This is one of those matches where I don’t care who wins.

• Who Should Win: Ciampa – because it’s time for Aleister Black to rock the Main Roster.
• Who Will Win: Vengeance will not be denied – Aleister Black

There we go, those are my thoughts on NXT TakeOver Phoenix. Brief, to the point because I’m not totally up to speed on NXT, but I will be.

Blog (s) Hiatus

Well, I’ve said this before, I will say it again: HERE WE GO AGAIN.

In August I put out a Blog Statement announcing I was putting my Blogs to a Monthly Schedule for the remainder of 2018 – excluding Raw Flesh.

The plan was to put them back on track on 2019.

Not long after posting that, after much consideration, I decided to put all Blogs, including RAW FLESH, on hiatus until 2019.

This was supposed to have been announced weeks ago, but didn’t happened because I was sick and spent Halloween in the hospital with pneumonia. Getting better was a more of a priority then posting.

In the New Year, the Blogs will return starting from scratch. I need to prioritize certain things and this is the best decision at the moment – and will be better for the Blogs in the long run.

Upon their return The Burning Mind, This Is A True Story, What I Watch I Review and Raw Flesh will be posted on a Monthly Basis. As the year progresses and things play out I may post more often, perhaps even moving back to a bi-weekly or weekly schedule.

Right now, a monthly schedule will be best.

I will however return to doing the Burning Mind weekly Reviews each Saturday.

Wrestlementary will be handled differently – an actual format for Wrestlementary will be figured out and announced later.

All Blogs Will Return with ‘State of’ initial posts on:

HELL IN A CELL - THOUGHTS & PREDICTIONS

*** A Special Note before we get down to business. In my Blog Statement on Wednesday, August 15th – when I revamped my blogs for the remaining of 2018 – I wrote I would basically do three pieces: Thursday – Discuss the last months Raw and SD Live; Friday – Preview the PPV; Saturday – Predictions.
Well, I tried to keep to that, but when writing the pieces I realized how redundant it is to do a Recap Piece and a Preview breaking down the card with much the same info. So I decided I would do it all in one piece – this one you are reading right now!

WELCOME TO WRESTLEMENTARY’S HELL IN A CELL THOUGHTS AND PREDICTIONS

Are we going to Hell? Or is this going to be one HELL of a good time?

Can Hell In A Cell match the Epic WWE Pay-Per-Views/Events that have happened so far in 2018?

The Answer: NO. Because there hasn’t been an Epic event yet this year. Wait, the Rumble? The real one, not the Saudi one.

Can Hell In A Cell be the Epic WWE Pay-Per-View/Event that we all know they can do? The one we want and deserve? MAYBE.

Can Hell In A Cell erase the bad taste of Summerslam? PLEASE.

Can Hell In A Cell be good? WE HOPE.

I know we still have three-and-a-half months, three Pay-Per-Views/Events (one of them SURVIVOR SERIES) left to go, but Hell In A Cell may be the WWE’s last chance to capture its audience this year.

Why?

Because the Holidays are coming up and there are many more things to divert peoples attention, and for people to spend money on.

Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are looming, the NFL season is here, and let’s not forget The World Series is getting closer.

If the WWE wants to keep eyes on the prize and merchandize sales it needs to step up now!

The first step the WWE needs to make (and should have done long before now) is the end the confusion and clarify what matches are actually in the Hell in a Cell. Every year this happens, they announce matches FOR Hell In A Cell (The Event itself), but don’t make clear what matches are IN Hell In A Cell (The Match itself).

Or they could take a note from IMPACT/TNA’s Lockdown PPV and make every match a Hell In A Cell match. Now that would be something. Imagine Rousey versus Bliss inside the Cell, Bliss could go full violent heel.

Still, just to clarify what IS and IS NOT a Hell In A Cell match would be good.

Here’s the good thing, the WWE started building toward the Hell In A Cell PPV the RAW after Summerslam. Here the so-so thing: Three of these matches are basically re-matches from Summerslam (the one difference is Brie and Maryse added to Miz versus Bryan)

Okay, let’s get right to it:

HELL IN A CELL

MATCHES AND PREDICTIONS

Wow, look at this line up, will you.

The Wow isn’t for the matches – it’s because there are 3 RAW and 5 SD Live Matches on the card. Making this an SD Live heavy event and bodes well for it being much better than the normal PPV of 2018.

However, as of Friday, one of those announced matches has been moved to the Kick Off Show, which is only being listed as one hour long.

Is this good or bad? Maybe the WWE doesn’t have high hopes for this show and is focusing more on the Australian Super Show (since they have spent ample time building the only announced match (HHH v Undertaker)).

Or, to be more positive, maybe it is a good thing. Maybe they have decided to try and streamline this show and focus on the quality rather than quantity.

We can hope.

HELL IN A CELL

THE KICK OFF SHOW MATCH

• SD LIVE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP: The New Day versus Rusev Day

There has been absolutely no build to this match – at least between the teams. The build was the exact same Build that saw the New Day compete at Summerslam, but win by DQ. A Tag Team Tournament to crown #1 contenders.

New Day won the first tournament. Rusev Day won the second.

One things for sure, a Day will win!

Why New Day Should Win: They are the longer established team – and will go down as one of the greatest of all time. They only just regained the titles, it may be too soon to lose them.

Why Rusev Day Should Win: Because it is becoming harder and harder to ignore the impact and popularity of Rusev Day. How long can the WWE keep Rusev from a title? Or Rusev and English?

Who Will Win: I love both teams. I don’t care who win, I just want to see a great match. But I want Rusev to have a title. So: Rusev Day.

HELL IN A CELL

THE MAIN CARD

THE RAW MATCHES AND PREDICTIONS

• RAW Women’s Championship: Ronda Rousey versus Alexa Bliss

At one time I was not looking forward to this match. I wasn’t really sure what they could do to build this match. The build to Summerslam wasn’t good (derailed partly by the Anvil’s Untimely passing and Natalya’s time off), and the match was a terrible squash in a Main Event spot.

After the last two RAWs, the build has elevated this match somewhat. I still think that Ronda is Champ to soon, without a chase or build to her win. Alexa is a solid heel, still growing in the ring. Its help that Alexa has added a new move to her arsenal – Rousey’s own Arm Bar! Could we see Alexa try tapping Ronda out with her signature move?

Why Ronda Should Win: She’s clearly the better of the two, with no way Alexa could beat her one-on-one.

Why Alexa Should Win: Alexa as Champion and Ronda chasing her is a more compelling story, and better for business. Alexa can win as she is vicious and cut throat, but should do so only if Foxxy and Mickie get involved. If this happens, and Alexa wins by group beat down, it protects Ronda and gives her, her first loss without destroying her mystique.

Also, if Alexa wins then her match with Trish takes on new meaning at Evolution – and I guarantee more people will tune in if it becomes a title match and Trish could win one more title.

Who Will Win: Alexa Bliss.

• RAW Tag Team Title Match: Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntrye versus Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins

This is the match I was hoping would be announced. It needed to happen and the Tag Titles on the line are a good thing. These are evenly matched, excellent teams. Dolph and Drew have shown great chemistry together and Dean and Seth are an experience duo.

However, will either team win this match? Might the Revival and/or The B-Team come looking for revenge?

Why Dolph and Drew Should Win: They are the fresher tag team, on a roll and there is more upside to them winning. Let the Shield, Revival and B-Team Chase them. They could be the dominate tag team RAW needs.

Why Dean and Seth Should Win: Because they are the Shield. After two weeks of beat downs, riots, arrest, near arrest, the Shield need something positive. A Win would be it.

Who Will Win: Dolph and Drew.

• Universal Title Match – Inside Hell In A Cell: Roman Reigns versus Braun Strowman

Yes, now this is a build that RAW is getting right.

The Return of the Shield in what should have been a Heel move.

Braun’s Heel turn and joining forces with Drew and Dolph after announcing his Cash-In.

An all-out Brawl to start the 9/3 RAW and The Shield Arrested, and another Brawl on 9/10.

RAW has focused on this Universal Title Match and that is a good thing.

With the Universal Title on an active, full time Work Horse, things should improve as now something can be done with the Title – beyond just wonder where the absentee Champion is.

There has been so many tangents for it, and there are so many possibilities as to what can happen here.

The SHIELD are back, stopping Braun from winning the Title. Braun has aligned himself with Dolph and Drew. Dolph and Drew beat up the Revival and stole their Tag Title Match and took the titles from the B Team.

Will the Shield interfere? Dolph and Drew most certainly will. Could the Revival interfere looking for revenge on Dolph and Drew?

There are so many threads it’s interesting.

I like Braun, but have never been a big Reigns fan. However, Braun is the one opponent that really brings something more out of Reigns.

My one thing against this match right now: Mick Foley. Why? Yes, I know: 20 year celebration of his Hell In A Cell match. It might make sense if it was the first Hell In A Cell match, but it wasn’t. His lack of mobility already affects any pacing this match will have and his presence makes me believe more there will be a swerve.

Why Braun Should Win: It’s his time, and he has called his shot cashing in. He needs to win in order to be truly solidified as the Monster Among Men, as he failed twice before against Lesnar. Braun could be a great Heel Champion for the faces among RAW to chase, and with Dolph and Drew at his side it could be a long hard chase.

Why Roman Should Win: Roman doesn’t need to win, but a loss will hurt him. After finally conquering Lesnar, he needs to follow that up with a win here to cement his Big Dog status. He could get a clean win, or the Shield could help him.

Who Will Win: Braun Strowman.

As always the cage will never keep anyone out, I expected an all-out riot and for Braun to come out with a victory that puts him at the top of the food chain, but protects Roman and sets the stage for more matches.

SD LIVE MATCHES AND PREDICTIONS

Two things I write above are in play here: 1) This is a SD Live heavy show – that’s a good thing. I hope; 2) we only know for sure that one of these matches is in the Hell In A Cell match itself: Hardy versus Orton.

They clarity of this needed to happen weeks ago, many people (myself included) initially thought Daniel Bryan/Brie Bella versus The Miz/Maryse would be in Hell In A Cell, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

• Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella versus The Miz and Maryse

I Love Bryan and The Miz. Maryse is okay. Brie, No. I don’t understand why we are getting a Summerslam Rematch here. I get why Brie is involved after Maryse’s Summerslam sleight of hand, I just don’t think they add anything to the match.

The build has been good, with both women getting involved, and both Couples at one time getting the upper hand. Of the matches from SD Live, this one has had the most physical interaction.

Why Daniel Bryan/Brie Bella should win: Daniel needs a big win, badly. Brie needs on too, especially is she is back wrestling at any regular way. Daniel can also use the boost of getting The Miz off his back if they ever plan on putting a title on him again.

Why The Miz/Maryse should win: A win would help The Miz, but he could survive the loss better than Bryan. Maryse is a nonfactor, as she will probably not be wrestling again anytime soon. The most sense for a Miz win would be if they are planning to elevate him into a title picture sometime soon.

Who Will Win: Daniel Bryan/Brie Bella

• Hell In A Cell Match: Jeff Hardy versus Randy Orton

Of any match on the card, this has the longest current build. It goes back almost three months: to Randy attacking Hardy when he was still US Champion and initially feuding with Nakamura.

Randy has been very vicious and nasty, returning to his heel ways. Jeff it seems has tried to stay centered and in control, but it starting to lose it.

The question I have, it why are they spending this time and putting essentially two part timers in such a spot?

There is one reason I can think of: Broken. With the face paint and “Obsolete” references, the Hell In A Cell would be the perfect place for Brother Nero to resurrect.

Why Randy Should Win: No real good reason, unless they want to use him for future big angles.

Why Jeff Hardy Should Win: Broken. If they are going to tease it, do it. And not in the watered down “Woken” crap way.

Who Will Win: Jeff Hardy.

• SD Live Women’s Championship: Charlotte Flair versus Beck Lynch

This build has been done really well, and will the exception of a ‘fan’ attacking Charlotte, has been done with limited interaction.

This build and feud is personal and built upon the characters and a sense of betrayal more than anything else. But who betrayed who is the question.

Becky Lynch as a Heel has been a breath of fresh air and brought out something totally new and unseen in her, which is awesome.

Expect this match to be emotional, personal, hard hitting, vicious, nasty and to steal the show.

Why Charlotte Should Win: Charlotte feels her friend has turned on her for no reason. That Becky would have down the same to Charlotte during their Summerslam triple threat if she had the chance. Charlotte may be right. She will be more emotional and driving in that, but will that keep her from pulling the trigger?

Why Becky Will Win: Because it is her time. Because Heel Becky is even more awesome than Face Becky. Forget straight fire, welcome Straight Cold Fire. Becky will be much more vicious and out to prove it’s her time and take the title.

Who Will Win: Becky Lynch.

• WWE Championship AJ Styles versus Samoa Joe

Talk about getting personal, this is personal. This should be in Hell In A Cell.

What can I really say here? I like the Build, but I think the WWE being isolationist has caused them to drop the ball. Imagine if they build on the ten plus year of this feud outside of the WWE?

How epic could it be?

The Build here is basically the same leading into Summerslam, with very little difference. I hope this match is better than that one.

I’m engaged, but not as much as I should be. The problem is Samoa Joe is supposed to be a bas ass, yet he’s trying to scare little girls?

Why Joe Should Win: A Joe win furthers this feud as adds fuel to the fire. Joe could be the one thing SD Live is lacking: A Dominate Heel Champion.

Why AJ Should Win: the feel good story of a man fighting for his family.

Who Will Win: Samoa Joe. Joe’s tactics might not be ‘bad ass,’ but they are working. AJ snapped at Summerslam and loss the match by DQ. The same could happen here, but I don’t think so. Joe is under AJ’s skin, which will cause AJ to make mistakes and Joe to take him down.

What’s more dangerous than a man who can beat you physically? A man who can beat you physically and mentally.

Joe Wins.


FINAL THOUGHTS:
Initially I was very distant on Hell In A Cell. Very much sort of “whatever.”

But in writing this, and seeing that the entire card is eight matches (one Kick Off Match and seven Main Card), I’ve started to rethink Hell In A Cell.

Already it is a more streamlined and focused card them any other PPV/Event of the year. As I wrote could be the case above. For this PPV/Event the WWE has done a decent job of actually building up the matches, not just throwing as many on the card as possible.

Maybe, just Maybe, Hell In A Cell could be the PPV we need.

The Build is there.

The Talent is there.

Now we just have to see if they can execute it on Sunday.

Wrestlementary - A Blog Statement

I have recently posted the full Blog Statement on Facebook and my State of the Master Blog (Read Here: http://thestateofthemaster.blogspot.com/2018/08/state-of-master-blog-statement.html)

This is more or less a condensed version for Wrestlementary.

Wrestlementary will be going monthly for the remainder of 2018, starting September.

In December I will decide whether to keep Wrestlementary monthly, or try a different more manable schedule than before.

For the remainder of this year I will focus on the Main Roster WWE, as I am on NXT, Lucha Underground, Impact, Championship Wrestling From Arizona.

The monthly format for Wrestlementary will be this: On the Thursday before each PPV I will post a monthly RAW and Smackdown Live piece discussing the happenings of the last month leading into the PPV.

Friday I will preview the PPV with a breakdown of the Build to it, and the matches on the Card. Saturday I will post my official predictions.

The following Wednesday I will post my thoughts on the PPV and the Fallout.

I plan on being up-to-date on other wrestling shows I am behind on and discussing them again in the New Year.

The Card to Date (8/6/2018)

Here we go, I am actually writing my first SummerSlam piece.

A little personal history: I, like many fans my age, have seen every SummerSlam when they actually aired. In fact, I’ve probably seen many of them multiple times and I know I have watched specific matches dozens of times (Honky v Warrior; Rude v Warrior in the Cage).

In fact I personally believe more pivotal moments have happened at Summerslam than WrestleMania.

Ok, done.

Let’s talk 2018 for now.

Today, Monday, is only August 6, Summerslam is only 14 day away on Sunday, August 19th and we already have what seems to be a stacked card.

Let’s take a look shall we?

Nine total matches and every main roster title is on the line except or the RAW Tag Titles. Will the B Team defend at Summerslam at all? Probably, but I’ll bet it will be on the Pre-Show.

I would start breaking down the matches themselves now, but I think that would be useless. I wouldn’t be surprised, in fact I expect it, if some of these matches get changed in some way leading up to the show.

Look at the SD Live Women’s Title Match, it was supposed to be Becky’s chance at a one-on-one title shot, but they went and added Charlotte to the match for no real reason. Maybe so both can carry Carmella?

For now I’m going to break down the card like this:

MUST SEE:
WORLD Title Match: AJ Styles versus Samoa Joe

• These two have had great matches, I expected it again. It would be nice if the WWE would build off their decade long past.

LOOKING FORWARD TO:
Braun Strowman versus Kevin Owen – With the Money in the Bank Briefcase on the line.

• Kevin Steen would kill Braun. I’d love to see a better match then Extreme Rules, and I am hoping for it. Both guys have a reason to fight.

Cruiserweight Title Match: Cedric Alexander versus Drew Gulak

• Love Ced. Love Drew. Could steal the show. Expect to see placed on the Pre-Show.

IC Title Match: Dolph Ziggler versus Seth Rollins

• Again? Yes.

SD Live Tag Titles: The Bludgeon Brothers versus ????

• Really open on this match, but I hope it’s The Bar. 

YAWN:
US Title Match: Shinsuke Nakamura versus Jeff Hardy

• I’ve soured on Shinsuke, his act is getting old – even as a heel. Jeff, no thanks.

SD Live Women’s Title: Carmella versus Becky Lynch versus Charlotte Flair

• I was really hoping for a Lynch win in a one-one-one match, even then I wasn’t looking forward to the match. With Charlotte added, it just makes me think they are going to keep the strap on Carmella.

RAW Woman’s Title Match: Alex Bliss versus Ronda Rousey

• I like Bliss. I like Ronda. I don’t expect much of a match, more of a showcase for Ronda. It’s too soon anyway, but that won’t stop them putting the title on Ronda.

UNIVERSAL Title Match: Brock Lesnar versus Roman Reigns

• Who cares anymore?

This is all I am going to do for a breakdown at the moment. Why? Because I am expecting the standard WWE move of making them more ‘interesting’ and ‘must see,’ by changing things up. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more stipulations added, or another match turned into a Triple Threat.

We’ll see.

Keep in mind I have written this BEFORE tonight’s RAW has happened.

My next SummerSlam piece will be Thursday or Friday, where I will discuss any SummerSlam news, notes, new matches or match changes coming out of this week’s RAW and SMACKDOWN LIVE.

Next week, starting Wednesday, August 15th, I will break down the entire card and post my official prediction on Saturday, August 18th.

In the few years I have been doing Wrestlementary, I have posted A LOT of blogs, and gone A LONG time without doing anything.

Two years in a row I have tried to do Mania month only to have things fall apart. I have twice announced my return to posting this year, only for it to not happen.

The month of July was railroaded because I ended up dealing with someone else’s problem and having an unexpected and unwanted Terror of a house guest. (Read more at my State of the Master Blog: Insert link).

Now with it being August I am returning to writing Wrestlementary. In fact this will be SummerSlam Month – as I will focus on my thoughts on the WWE for the year-to-date and on the Road to Summerslam.

Will Summerslam be the Hottest Event of the Summer? I’ll let you know.

Over the course of August I will break down and analyze SummerSlam as we learn more about the card after each RAW and SMACKDOWN LIVE.

My first piece will go up Monday, August 6th, in time for the first RAW of August.

In between the SummerSlam pieces I will write my thoughts on RAW, SMACKDOWN LIVE and the WWE in General so far in 2018.

So, for August Wrestlementary will focus on the WWE and Summerslam.

Meanwhile I will also get caught up on other shows I am behind on, and start writing on them again in September.

Why Wrestling?

This is my second attempt at writing Why Wrestling – and I am writing while watching Monday Night RAW on July 2nd. I hated the piece I had written, which was supposed to go up last night.

It didn’t go up because of an unforeseen issue I had to deal with, which I am turning into a positive by taking the time to write an even better piece – I believe this will be.

It will be up in time for Smackdown Live tonight (July 3rd – West Coast Feed).

Let’s get right down to it: Professional Wrestling or Sports Entertainment as Vince McMahon and the WWE would brand it, has been around for over a century now. The WWE, under various names, around for just over 50 years.

Why? Because it has connected with its audience and has stayed connected.

An argument can be made that wrestling is the Modern Myth of the World and wrestlers the Greek Gods of our age – a similar take to that on Comic Books.

Like Comic Books, Wrestling is filled with colorful characters and grand spectacle. In fact many wrestlers – such as the Ultimate Warrior and Alexander Hammerstone – are living breathing comic book characters.

The Difference? Comic books are in print; Wrestling is real life.

Then there is the main argument people have against Wrestling: It’s Fake. Pre-Determined. Fixed.

So what?

Guess what, so is Star Wars. So is Die Hard. Expendables. Transporter. Crank. I could go on and on.

I don’t understand this: How can people be entertained and love Action Films (even the stupid ones) and NOT like Pro-Wrestling? What’s the difference?

Wrestling is a live action, action film.

A Good Action Film has a Plot, Story, Conflict, Violence, Action and Surprises.

Wrestling has a Plot, Story, Conflict, Violence, Action and Surprises.

Someone explain to me the difference.

Oh, wait, Wrestling is real life. No acting. No Stunt Men. Real people put it all on the line in wrestling matches to entertain the masses.

Wrestling is a Grand Spectacle, whether it be the WWE or Indie Scene. It’s larger than life, but ground in life.

Here is a mixture of everything, and there is something for every to connect with.

Horror: The Undertaker, Funnybone, Killer Kevin Kross

Drama: Rey Mysterio (The Underdog overcoming odds)
Post-Apocalyptic: The Bludgeon Brothers, The Road Warriors
Punk: Reno Scum
Steampunk: Beck Lynch
Rock N’ Roll: Chris Jericho, The Freebirds

No matter what you like, among the vast characterscape of Pro-Wrestling, you’ll find someone to follow.

And right there is the Ultimate Answer to Why Wrestling? The emotional connection.

You don’t just watch wrestling – be it on TV or at a LIVE Event. You INVEST in wrestling. You follow your favorite wrestler, you feeling their pain, cry at their losses, and celebrate in their victories.

Trust me when I say – there is nothing like seeing Pro Wrestling live. There are few greater feelings then having your favorite wrestler win a match, then come to you and celebrate with you.

Why Wrestling?
Because it’s the ultimate thrill ride, because it has an emotional connection like nothing else on the planet.

Ug, well here we go again . . . Yep. It’s time for another Wrestlementary State of . . .

Ug, well here we go again . . .

Yep. It’s time for another Wrestlementary State of . . . after another unannounced hiatus.

It’s really odd, I tend to plan big things around Mania Time, but then end up taking a hiatus. It makes no sense last year, Mania was great. This year, Main was not-so-great (terrible and bloated). I’ll touch on that later.

While other hiatus were unplanned, this one was mixed. Initially unplanned, but I decidedly too really step back because of my disgust with what WWE was doing. As I wrote in a piece before, I even got behind for the first time since the first RAW broadcast. This year was the first time I have not watched RAW when it aired.

When I posted my piece on Alexander Hammerstone that was supposed to kick off my return to writing, but it didn’t.

Okay, there are a few other reason I slacked off, the biggest of which is being sick and a skin infection, nothing serious (I think) but annoying and trying to deal with that.

A Couple of Changes Coming

• Facebook and Twitter: I will be closing down the Wrestlementary Facebook and Twitter Accounts. I will do all posting on Facebook and Twitter through my Ace Masters accounts. It’s a little much to keep track of multiple accounts.

A Couple of Returns

• I am hoping that in July or August that Chris Rose and Dave Parrish return to writing pieces for Wrestlementary. We will see.

July 2nd – The Return

Yeah, I’ve said it before. Yes I have meant it before. Give me a break, pencil neck geeks.

On July 2nd Wrestlementary will return with a “Why Wrestling” post. I will discuss what wrestling is, what it means to me, and why I love it so much. I will also be posting a similar piece “Why Comics” on July 4th for the return of The Burning Mind Blog.

Also in July I will write and post a multi-part State of the WWE – 2018 the First Half. In this State Of I will discuss and break down Monday Night RAW, Smackdown Live! and the PPVs. Plus, give my take on where the WWE is, where it seems they may be going, and what they need to do.

In fact, July might be the Half-Year-In-Review month, as I also plan to do State Of’s for IMPACT, and the local Championship Wrestling From Arizona and Arizona Wresting Federation promotions.

I will also post more pieces of my “Best Wrestlers You MAY Never Have Heard Of’ series.

As July progresses I will return to my normal coverage of RAW, SD LIVE and Impact.

WWE MAIN ROSTER MANIA - THE ROYAL RUMBLE - 2018 EDITION

I wrote in my Final Thoughts of Main Roster Mania Week 4 that I didn’t think the WWE did a good job of promoting the event. Especially the women’s Royal Rumble. I stand by that statement, but promotion of an event doesn’t affect the quality of the event.

For the first time in a long time the Royal Rumble lived up to its name.

This was truly a Royal Event.

THE KICKOFF SHOW

First, I want to ask, does anyone actually watch the Kickoff Show as a preview to the event? I’m serious. I don’t. I usually wait until about 45 or 30 before minutes before the actual event, fast forward through most of the show and just watch the matches.

I did the same here.

MATCH #1
Kalisto, Gran Metallik and Lince Dorado versus TJP, Jack Gallagher and Drew Gulak

Wow, to be honest I wasn’t even sure if Kalisto, Gran Metallik, Lince Dorado and TJP were still with the WWE. I guess this was the replacement for Enzo versus Cedric. A standard cruiserweight match that saw Kalisto go over TJP for the win.

MATCH #2
The Revival versus The Good Brothers

A short, but good, but hard hitting match that saw the Revival gain a measure of revenge following that loss at RAW 25.

MATCH #3
US Open Challenge: Bobby Roode versus Mojo Rawley

Why? Why Mojo? All this week people have speculated this would be Ziggler’s return. I held out hope for a debut – James Storm! Instead Mojo stunk the place up to lead into the Rumble. If he had his best match against Roode in the US Tournament, this match was a step back. Roode Schooled Him.

THE MAIN SHOW

We kick off the show HOT! With the WWE Championship!

MATCH #1
AJ STYLES (Champion) defends against Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens

Kami, aka Kevin and Sami Show, aka Yep Movement are reminding me of LayCool. Remember them? When Michelle McCool and Layla were co-women’s champion the idea failed then. Kevin and Sami are far more talented in-ring then Michelle and Layla, but the idea still wouldn’t work.

Fortunately it didn’t happen.

This was a fun, damn good match that erased the taste of the Mojo failure. Kevin and Sami did all their comedy spots and pulled out all the shenanigans that make them fun, while still showing just how good they are with one-on-one time with AJ.

AJ continued the story of his WWE Career, proving he is Phenomenal in any playing field: even or handicapped.

AJ Styles is still the World Champ!

After the match Kevin and Sami again complained to Shane that they were screwed. Shane just smiled and said ‘Yep!’

Next up Smackdown Tag Team Championship!

MATCH #2
THE USOS (Champions) defend against Gable and Shelton in a 2 out of 3 falls match.

I truly thought this was the night Gable and Shelton would win the titles. Especially with one of the USOs getting a DUI leading into the Rumble. The WWE usually frowns upon that. Instead, the USOs locked down this excellent and highly athletic match up and put down the challengers in two straight falls.

Let me repeat that, the USOs put down Gable and Shelton in two straight falls.

It’s Rumble Time!

MATCH #3

THE ROYAL RUMBLE

(MEN’S MATCH)

The first thing I have to say is this, Holy Crap what a Rusev Day Response for Rusev at #1, almost as loud as Finn Balor at #2.

Rusev and Balor started out what ended up being one of my favorite Rumble match and what I believe is the best Rumble match in a decade at least. There were no big debuts (ex: Styles), but there were two surprise NXT Entrants (Andrade Almas, Adam Cole) and two brief returns with The Hurricane and Rey Mysterio!

What made this match better than many previous match was the pacing and continuing action. Unlike other Rumbles (such as with Goldberg/Brock or Hogan/Warrior) there wasn’t a huge angle to get over, and there was little in the way of down time slowing the pacing and making it boring.

They made this Rumble feel like something special and truly made it “One against All,” nowhere more showcased than Reigns eliminating Rollins. Furthermore we had 8 guys go over twenty minutes, 5 of those over twenty-five minutes, 3 of them over thirty, with Fin Balor clocking in at 57 minutes and eventual winner SINSHUKE NAKAMURA outlasting everyone and going strong at 44 minutes.

I loved this Rumble match. Nakamura was favored to win going in, so that was no surprise. I believe it was the right call.

Why?

WRESTLEMANIA: AJ Styles versus Nakamura! Hell Yeah!


MATCH #4

RAW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
Seth Rolling & Jason Jordan (Champions) defend against The Bar

Finally! An end to the Jason Jordan and Seth Rollins debacle of a title run. Well, not Seth Rollins, because Tyler Black would never tag himself out of a match like punk ass Jason Jordan did. Due to Jason Jordan being Jason Jordan, this was basically a handicap match with Rollins taking on The Bar by himself.

In truth, Rollins in a handicap match against Sheamus and Cesaro is better than it would have been had Jordan had any real ring time.


MATCH #5

RAW UNIVERSAL TITLE MATCH
Brock Lesnar (Champion) defends against Braun Strowman and Kane in a Triple Threat Match

Is anyone else as tired of this Brock Lesnar multi-person matches gimmick as I am? All it really does is put Brock over and bury everyone else. I know Heyman has mentioned this a few times, but they should really play up the idea of the WWE wanting to do anything to get the title off of Brock, especially with his history with Angle.

I LOVE Kane. Big fan of Braun. Take or leave Brock. All guys are capable of good matches. At first, I was down on this one, but then watched it again. For the time it received it delivered what it should have: A slobber knocker, pier-six-brawl of power moves that left destruction in its wake.

When the dust settled, Lesnar conquered the Monsters.

Stephanie McMahon on commentary? Alexa Bliss and Charlotte ringside? That can only mean one thing!

THE WOMEN’S ROYAL RUMBLE IS THE MAIN EVENT!

YES!

Maybe it’s the fact that this was the first Women’s Rumble. Maybe it’s the fact that I have wanted to see this my entire life. But this match was

WOMAMAZING!!!

I loved every moment of this match except for Vicki Guerrero, she had no place in this match at all. Other than Vickie, I think every women in this match – no matter how long they were in – gave it their all, from current stars to legends from the past, no one phoned this in.

This IS a special moment, and everyone knew it.


I love seeing ladies who paved the way (Molly Holly, Jacqueline, Beth Phoenix, Lita, Trish, Torrie) get their chance to shine in this match, even though we all knew they wouldn’t win.

As expected Asuka won, last eliminating Nikki Bella to win the match – while the WWE teased pissing us all off by having Nikki win.










I have to single out some special performances here:
1. Lita – How Awesome was Lita during her time in this match? Serious, this was Team Extreme Lita.

2. Michelle McCool – She looked like she hasn’t missed a step. For the 8 minutes she was in, she was dominate, eliminating a now record 5 women.

3. Nia Jax – Awesome. That’s it. Awesome. She has come a long way and this proved it. I would not have been disappointed had she won.

4. Becky Lynch – Had the second longest time in this match at entrant #2.

5. Trish startus – Entrant #30 and she looked awesome. I was never a fan but she was great here, and for a moment I though the WWE might just pull the trigger.

6.  Sasha Banks – Most know I am not a big Sasha fan, she’s good, I just don’t think she’s at the level many people put her at. She lasted almost the entire match, nearly an hour and it took both Bella’s to oust her. No matter what – even over her title reigns and matches with Charlotte and Bayley – her performance here cements a Sasha Banks legacy.

The Match was Awesome. Then came the most polarizing moment of the night!!

Rhonda Rousey pointing at the WrestleMania sign! Yep, she’s here. I know a lot of people had a problem with this (including Nia and Sasha (legit??)), but I didn’t. Brining her out here after the match was the right move, and a surprise.

Most people thought she would be in the Rumble – even win it! Now that would have been terrible, as it would have turned the event into a joke and would have just been used to intro Rousey to the WWE at the expense of all the ladies.

This way, just fine.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Can we do this again? Damn fine show all around and the best EVENT since last year’s WrestleMania.

The weakest match in the card was the Universal Triple Threat Title Match, and even that was good.

RATING: 8
